WHAT'S NEW
On
March 18th, 2008, we wired $1000.00 Canadian or $10,800 pesos to our bank in
Comitan for the kids Easter donation.
Gui
let us know that the money would be spent on a new carpet (Alfombra) for the
chapel (Capilla) in the boys Albergue and a new clothes washer for the girls
Albergue, with enough left over for treats for all the kids for Easter

November
26th, 2007
We
had sent an E-mail to our Mexican son, Guillermo, asking what the kids were in
need of for this Christmas. Here is his reply:
DEAR AMIGOS:
I HOPE YOU ARE OK OVER THERE.
AT LAST YESTARDAY, I COULD KNOW WHAT THE CHILDREN WANT FOR NEXT
CHRISTMAS.
WELL, CASA HOGAR DON BOSCO "GIRLS" THEY ARE STILL REPARING THE ROOF,
SO I THINK IT WILL BE FINISHED BEFORE DE LAST DAYS OF DECEMBER.
CASA HOGAR DON BOSCO, THE GIRLS, WILL WISH SOMETHING FOR THE COLD, FOR
EXAMPLE:
*BIG BLANKETS, BECAUSE NOW IN COMITAN SEEMS TOBE LIKE A CANADA WEATHER, TOO
MUCH COLD.
*SOME SWETERS TO WEAR FOR THE GIRLS, BECAUSE SOME OF THEM HAVE ONLY ONE AND NO
TOO MUCH HEAT OR HEAVY.
*THEY NEED AGAIN TWO BOILERS. BECAUSE SOMETIMES THEY TAKE A SHOWER WITH COLD
WATER, SOME OF THE BOILERS ARE NOT WORKING. I INVESTIGATED THE PRICE OF THEM,
THEY COST $ 2,100.00 EACH, (TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED PESOS).
SO, MY DEAR FAMILY, I THINK WHAT EVER MONEY YOU SEND FOR THESE THINGS, WOULD
BE VERY GOOD, ESPECIALLY THINKS FOR THE COLD WEATHER.
HERE IN MEXICO, WE ARE NOT READY FOR COLD WEATHERS. MAYBE SOME OF THE MONEY
THEY COULD USE FOR SOME MEDICINES FOR COLDS OR FOR VITAMINES "C".
TO ANOTHER HAND, SAN MARTIN DE PORRES (BOYS), THEY NEED TO GIVE SOME REPARINGS
OF THE ROOF. BECAUSE ONE OF THE ROOMS HAS PROBLEMS WITH THE RAINNING WATER.
I THINK BARRY AND PHILIP THAT THEY NEED SOME SWETERS AS WELL. YOU DO NOT HAVE
IDEA, THE COLD WE ARE HAVING HERE IN COMITAN
So,
on November 26th 2007,we transferred $3000.00 Canadian or approx $33,349 pesos
to our bank in Comitan. According to Gui, this should be enough to cover all the
kids needs and supply everyone with Christmas presents and Christmas dinner.

The
kids now have the money for the roof repairs.
Here
is the E-mail from Guillermo (by the way...Polilla is 'Moth')
Hello Bodies:
This morning i went to the bank, to get the money after I gave to Nun
Lidia in Cash $ 10,800.00 (Ten Thousand Eight Hundred Pesos).
So, Lidia told me that it will be enough to repair the roof. The day
before Yestarday i went to Casa hogar Don Bosco too and saw the roof, it
is very bad. There are lots of rats, and is comming from the roof POLILLA I do
not Know how to say in English. The wood is very Old. So The Carpinters is
going to change all the Girl`s room roof, in order to put wood new. I see
very Cheap 10,000.00 Pesos to repair that. The carpinters are doing that very
cheap knowing that the work benefits to the girls.
Well Barry, Nun Lidia said to me that she will send pictures to you now of the
roof, and some more when the work be finished. But she will write today a
e-mail letter giving all of you thanks for the money you sent.

In
essence, she is saying that the girls need a new roof and ceiling in the one
dormitory because of holes in the roof and ceiling and the abundance of rats
being able to enter the room.
Today
we transferred $1000.00 Canadian or approx. $10,869 Pesos to our bank in Comitan
for the necessary repairs.

Wonderful
'Rosy' Update
We
received an E-mail from Sister Lulu, who is now living in Mexico City. She is
one of the Nuns who were taking care of Rosy during her hospital stays in Mexico
City.
We
are very happy to convey the information that Rosy is doing VERY well. She is
getting better day after day. She now wants to continue on with her life. She
continues to go to the hospital for follow up treatments, but now infrequently.
She has gone back to school and is starting a computer course.
It
would appear that, thanks to all your prayers, expert treatment by several
dedicated doctors, and exceptional care, she has beaten the cancer that has been
plaguing her for years.
Here
is the E-mail that we received from Sister Lulu and our friend, Guillermo's,

We
are pleased to say that today, we transferred $2,500.00 Canadian to our bank in

time $5000 Pesos was given to the Nuns to help with 'Rosy's' treatments. (Rosy
had another operation for the tumor on her face on December 8th)

Rosy Update
November 14th,
2006
Today we received
an E-mail from Guillermo.
Rosy has had a
platinum plate installed in her mouth along with a reel(?) and screw.
The bad news is
that the doctors have discovered another tumor in her face for which they will
be performing another operation to attempt to get rid of it also.
She is currently
on a regime of chemotherapy which is proving very expensive.
Rosy's outlook
does not sound too promising at this point, but as Gui says, the nuns and
everyone still has hope for her.
We will continue
to raise funds for Rosy, although, we have made it clear to our friends that we
are just unable to provide much of the money needed.
We will still be
sending a sum of money for the rest of the kids for their Christmas around the
middle of December.
Here is Gui's
E-mail"
Hi Barry,
We hope all of you are ok. My mother had given the money $5000.00 Pesos to the
nuns to pay the Rosy`s operation. They said to my mother Thanks so much to you
for that.
They need at least more money for the medicine. It is very expensive,
they just expensived $11,466.00 Pesos Buying medicines and Quimiosterapy,
after operation.
They Just in October Expensived $ 4,274.61 Pesos Buying a piece of platino to
Rosy mouth. In September the same thing. a Broca and Tornillo $4055.49. So
they have lots of expensives as you can see really.
At least they need $ 5000.00 pesos montly.
Now Rosy is receiving Quimios, and she will be operated again, the nun said to
my mother that Rosy has a big tumor in the face now. They do not Know When she
will be operated yet. I will let you Know.
From my point of view, I see Rosy´´s case very dificult, but everybody here
has the hope.
Ok. Barry, we are in touch.
love

Rosy Update
September 27th,
2006
We received an
E-mail from Guillermo today regarding Rosy and her battle with cancer of the
esophagus.
She finally has
had her operation on September 25th.
She is currently
in intensive care in Mexico City.
The doctors
decided that, even though the cancer is advanced, and her chances of recovery
are still slim, that they do the operation.
Your prayers are
still very much needed.
Here is the
E-mail from Guillermo:
WELL, FINALLY ROSELIA WAS OPERATED THE DAY BEFORE YESTARDAY THE 25th OF
SEPTEMBER IN MEXICO CITY, AT LAST.
AFTER THE DOCTORS DETERMINATED THAT COULD BE A LITTLE POSSIBLE HOPE THAT SHE
COULD LIVE AGINST THE CANCER.
THE PRINCIPAL NUN FROM CASA HOGAR DON BOSCO CALLED ME YESTARDAY, TO TELL ME
THAT ROSELIA HAD THE CIRGURY AND SHE IS RECUPERATING OF THE OPERATION.SHE IS
IN TERAPY INTENSIVE. THEY ARE PRAYING AND ASKING GOD, THAT SOON SHE CAN BE
MUCH BETTER. THEY HAVE FAITH ABOUT THAT.
ALTHOGH DOCTORS, SAID THAT THIS CASE IS TOO MUCH DIFICULT.
ME AND MY FAMILY HOPE THAT ROSELIA CAN BE AFFAIR THIS PROBLEM.
DESAFORTUNALLY THE OPERATION WAS MADE TOO MUCH TIME AFTER, BUT ROSELIA WAS
FIRST AT ALL IN TREETMENTS. FIRST AT ALL THE DOCTORS SAID THAT THE STUDIES
WERE VERY CLEAR, SHOWING THE CANCER VERY ADVANCE, BUT THEY DECIDED TO
OPERATE HER.
FOR THE NUNS WAS VERY, VERY DIFICULT, BECAUSE ONE OF THEM, ONE BY ONE, HAS
TO BE IN THE HOSPITAL WITH HER.
WELL, NOW YOU CAN SHARE THIS WITH THE PEOPLE WHO HELP WITH MONEY AND
PRAYINGS.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THAT.
THE PRINCIPAL AND ME WILL BE IN TOUCH, ABOUT ROSELIA.
I CALLED MIGUEL, MY BROTHER, TO AKS HIM GO IN THE HOSPITAL TO SEE HOW IS
RECUPERATING ROSELIA. I HOPE HE CAN GO TO SEE HER.

Rosy Update
August 25, 2006
We received some bad news about
'Rosy' and her battle with cancer. Unfortunately, the doctor has examined Rosy
and has discovered that her cancer is, in fact, malignant. He has decided to
cancel the surgery as he feels that it would be better if he did not attempt the
operation. She is being kept in hospital in Mexico City to undergo further tests
and treatments.
We can take some solice in the
knowledge that the money we have sent will be well used for her ongoing
treatments.
As soon as we hear more news
about this brave little girl, we will post it here
Below is the E-mail we received
from our friend Rafael about Rosy:
I have bad news about Rosy. She is in Mexico city
because she was going to have an operation on Augost
29th. The doctor canceled it because detected
malignant cancer. She had some operations before but
until now they say the bad news. That´s so sad she is
going to be on a tratement but the doctor says is
better if they don´t operate her. she is going to stay
more time in Mexico to be in observation. As soon as I
have new news I will write you. i couldn´t have news
before because the superior wasn´t here and the other
nons didn´t know very well about.
As Rosy so succinctly put it in
an E-mail to us:
This disease that I have, is a way to accompany to Jesus
towards the calvario, alive it contents and I value the opportunity that this
offering me. Therefore I thank for much to them by as much kindness of God and

We will
continue to keep Rosys information and condition updated, just as soon as we
hear anything
Here is the
E-mail from Gui :
HI BARRY:
WELL, FIRST AT ALL, ROSY WAS NOT OPERATED LAST MONTH OF JULY, BECAUSE THERE

Emergency
Donation
July 10th,
2006
You all may
or may not remember, in the 'Achievements' section, we mentioned that there was
a young girl, who had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. We have, on a
couple of occasions, provided the funds for her to have chemotherapy on her
cancer. We had been informed that the cancer appeared to be inoperable, but
that, due to our funds, she has been able to survive for 5 years and counting.
Over the
weekend, we had made a phone call to our friends in Comitan to see how the
Easter donation had been used. During the conversation, our friends let us know
that a doctor had been found who was willing to do the surgery on the little
girl, who is now 12 years old.
The good
doctor was willing to do the surgery first and worry about getting paid after
the fact. The nuns have saved $6000 pesos ($600.00 Canadian) towards the total
cost of $30,000 pesos ($3,000 Canadian).
We are very
happy to report that, as of today, we transferred $2,400 Canadian to the bank
account in Comitan to pay for the operation in full.
We will keep
everyone posted as to the outcome of her operation.
Your prayers
are welcome and most needed.
Her name is
Roselia Cruz Perez (Rosy)
The
operation is scheduled for Monday, July 31st, 2006 at Hospital General De
Cancerologia in Mexico D.F. (City)

February 7, 2006
We are expanding!
Our thanks to Mr. Roger Beazley at Orthotics (Sarnia) in Point Edward, Ontario, for graciously allowing us to put in a small candy store in his waiting room.

October 25, 2005
"We first visited the girls' Albergue on Oct 7th. A phone call the day before, letting the nuns know that we were coming for a visit, allowed all of the girls to have a day off school to meet us.
We arrived loaded with Canada souvenirs (flags, pins and tattoos courtesy of Rose Marie Ur) along with balls, beach balls, bubbles, toys, stickers, school supplies, and boxes and boxes of candy from Canada. We also had gone to the local grocery store and bought a TON of food, fruit, meat, vegetables, milk, cheese, to the tune of about $175.00 Canadian. This expenditure did not come out of the money earmarked for the kids. The stuff from Canada was a big hit. You may remember that we had gotten a thank you card about a year ago from a little girl who was suffering from cancer of the esophagus. Unfortunately, she was away in Mexico City having more cancer treatments, so we were unable to meet her. Sad to say, we were told that in spite of being treated several times, that her cancer is considered terminal. We can only take comfort in the fact that some of the money sent from you all has extended her precious life for a few years.
We asked the nuns as to what was currently needed at Casa Hogar Don Bosco that we could supply funds for. They told us about a little girl who has a bad orthodontic problem and needed dental surgery. She was too embarrassed about her looks that she would not come out to meet all of us, but, Judy went inside to see her and give her some gifts.
The nuns also took us on a tour of the facility and showed us that the showers were in great need of repair and replacement. The kitchen had no cupboards, leaks in the walls and ceilings so that when it rained, the nuns could not cook food for the girls.
We spent several hours with the girls and were invited to stay for a meal with them, but we declined. They would have shared the precious food with us.
We asked Miguel (our friend and host in Mexico who's family are major benefactors to the Albergues) how much money it would take to make most of the repairs and medical treatment for the little girls teeth. He estimated that with discounts and some free labour from his contacts with local builders, that it would take perhaps $10,000 - $12,000 pesos or $1000.00 -$1,200 Canadian.
We presented the nuns with $10,000 pesos in cash to get things going.
On Oct 10th, we paid a visit to the boys at San Martin De Porres. Phil had the great idea to have enough pizza and pop delivered to the albergue for everyone to enjoy a big lunch. A phone call to 'Chico's Pizza' brought three ENORMOUS pizzas. Whenever in Comitan, be sure to call Chico's Pizza!!
We arrived loaded with more flags, pins, tattoos, balls, frisbees, stickers, school supplies, boxes and boxes of candy from Canada, etc, etc, etc., AND another van load of food from the grocery store.
We were greeted with a huge banner reading 'Welcome Federal Employees of Chatham' (the banner is in Phil's possession currently and some plans are being made for its display)
During our tour of the facility, we were astounded at the results of your donations over the years.
We saw the boys sleeping quarters where we saw all of the new mattresses we bought, saw the basketball court, new playground with swings and slides, etc, and toured the 'store' that has been built on the property, which is run by the kids and the nuns to make money for themselves. We also saw pictures of the stall at the market that your money paid to have built. We also saw that they had been able to buy a couple of used computers and they had the internet.
Again, we enjoyed several hours of visiting with the boys. One thing that we noticed was that initially some of the older boys (teenagers) felt that they had to act 'macho' and somewhat aloof. That quickly changed when we observed them putting Canada flag tattoos on their chests and bellies and enthusiastically joining in the fun.
The pizza was a big hit as most of the boys had never tasted pizza before.
As we enjoyed our visit, we enquired to the nuns as to what was most needed currently. We were told that the photocopier that had been purchased a few years ago and which was used to sell photocopies in the store to the public had broken down and was not repairable. This is a good moneymaker for the store.
We made arrangements with our friends to have a bank account opened so that we can have money transferred down to Mexico instead of using Western Union, which is quite a bit more expensive. Our friends are constantly in touch with the nuns and when something comes up that they need money quickly, our friends can take it out of the account. The account has been opened and we have a balance of $10,000 pesos, out of which will come a new photocopier for the store.
After our visit and pizza party with the boys, Phil, who is now 'hooked', suggested that we make a return visit to the girls and bring them pizza too.
So, on Oct 13th, we returned to the girls albergue, armed with 3 more 'Chico's' Pizzas and pop!
Stay tuned. By the way, the girls also have been able to procure a couple of used computers and they also have the internet.
